2. Huge deforested areas in the tropics could regenerate naturally, study finds
“Cleared or degraded tropical forests around the world covering a combined area larger than Saudi Arabia could regrow on its own, according to new research published Oct. 30 in the journal Nature. [… T]he permanence of regrown forests is critically important to the benefits it can provide to biodiversity and the climate.”
3. Minnesota tribe could soon get a solar-powered resilience hub
“A pair of developers are working to build a microgrid at an elementary school and community center on the White Earth Reservation in northern Minnesota [… which would] provide about 12 hours worth of backup power for residents to be able to charge cell phones, power medical equipment, or stay warm in the event of a power outage.”
4. An exchange between Indonesia and Tanzania supports food security and ocean health
“Around the world, WWF helps manage […] both traditional sustainability-oriented management and science-based practices. This combination supports long-term food security and biodiversity goals. […] Local ownership and management are […] key to achieving stable fisheries and social and economic benefits.”
5. Spiky blue devils and chocolate lilies: Victorian grassland bursts with wildflowers after ecological ‘reset’

6. Vast forests, wetlands and lakes conserved [in Ontario]

8. Building climate resilient cocoa farming in West Africa
“[… A] promising new approach to improve climate resilience in cocoa agroforestry across West Africa […] focuses on the critical role of leaf "phenology"—the seasonal changes in leaf cycles—in trees providing shade in managing climate impacts. [… S]hade trees that lose their leaves entirely during the dry season proved especially beneficial in maintaining soil moisture[….]”
9. New Zealanders save more than 30 stranded whales by lifting them on sheets

Apopo has introduced three new HeroRATS available for 'adoption.'
Baraka and Ronin are both mine detection rats, while Tamasha is a TB detection rat. Baraka and Tamasha are both based in Tanzania and Ronin works in Cambodia.
These African Giant Pouched Rats can scent and detect landmines safely in an area the size of a tennis court in 30 minutes. It would take a human using a metal detector 4 days to cover the same area. The rats are small enough that they don't trigger the mines, keeping both the animals and their handlers safe. The TB detection rats can do the work of a human technician running microscopic examination of sputum samples over 4 days in 20 minutes.
Some people might remember Magawa, the HeroRAT who was presented with the PDSA Gold Medal, which is considered the highest honour of gallantry and bravery an animal can be presented with for acts of service.
You can 'adopt' one of the rats with a monthly donation towards their care and upkeep, or buy a gift ranging from a basket of bananas, a nesting box for breeding pairs, and covering the cost of a health check up. Look at how cute their 'Romantic Dinner For Two' for breeding pairs is:

🌍 The Enriching Journey of the Maasai Tribe
The Maasai tribe is a significant community with a unique history. They originated from South Sudan, belonging to the Nilotic ethnic group. Due to unfavorable conditions for livestock farming, they were compelled to migrate in search of grazing land and water for their animals. On their journey, they passed through various regions, including the Ethiopian Highlands and the Great Rift Valley, eventually settling in the fertile lands of the Serengeti and Maasai Mara. Along the way, they encountered various indigenous communities, such as the Samburu, Kikuyu, and Luo, which contributed to the distinctiveness of the Maasai culture.
Today, the Maasai primarily live in Kenya and Tanzania, with an estimated population of around 1 million. They are divided into approximately 16 clans, with the Purko and Loita clans in Kenya and the Parakuyo clan in Tanzania being the most influential in terms of historical impact and size. Despite their geographical separation, the Maasai maintain a shared culture that binds them together.
In Kenya, the Maasai lead a semi-nomadic lifestyle, which contrasts with the more settled Maasai in Tanzania, who now engage in both farming and livestock herding. Their unique identity is immediately visible through their attire. In Kenya, they wear red shukas (blankets) adorned with intricate beadwork, while in Tanzania, the Maasai often wear blue and purple shukas. These variations in attire symbolize their unity in diversity.
Visiting the Maasai offers a unique learning experience. You can participate in their traditional dances, such as the adumu or jumping dance, and listen to elders recount stories of their origins. You will also have the chance to taste their traditional foods, like ugali (maize porridge), traditional drink (known as amarula –a mixture of fresh cow’s milk and cow blood), meat, and milk. Importantly, you will learn about their traditional herbal medicine practices, known as mitishamba. Examples include esititi, used for dental care, various herbs for treating malaria, and other plants for digestive health and body detoxification.
The Maasai tribe offers invaluable lessons in resilience, sustainability, and the importance of cultural heritage. This brief glimpse into their rich history and vibrant culture is just a taste of what this remarkable community has to offer.

Crafting Your Dream: A 6-Day Safari Journey Through Tanzania's Untamed Beauty
In the cradle of Africa’s sweeping plains and untamed wilds, a journey awaits—one that stirs with anticipation and unfolds in tales that only Tanzania can tell. To embark on a 6 days Tanzania safari is not merely to book a trip but to prepare for an epic of awe, teetering on the brink between the known world and the mysteries that thrive in the grasslands. Here, meticulous planning and unburdened curiosity are the essential rites to embark upon this adventure.
The Company of Dreamers: Selecting Your Guide
A Tanzanian safari is best experienced with a guide who sees beyond landscapes, who feels the heartbeat of the land and understands the wild’s silent language. Chalema Tanzania Safaris doesn’t just design itineraries; they weave experiences that immerse you in the vivid soul of Africa. With guides who understand the spirit of this land, your journey becomes more than a series of destinations—it becomes a living, breathing narrative.
Where You Lay Your Head Matters
Safari lodging, from the intimate embrace of a luxury canvas tent to the indulgence of an upscale lodge, defines the very fabric of your experience. Consider carefully: Do you wish to hear lions’ distant roars at midnight under the Tanzanian stars, or will you seek comfort in the elegant solitude of a lodge, where dusk descends over miles of wilderness? Your choice becomes part of the journey itself, a space to reflect on days thick with discovery.
Knowing Your Heart’s Desire: What Calls You Here?
Are you drawn to witness the raw might of the Big Five or to be mesmerized by the timeless march of the wildebeest migration? Or perhaps you dream of the elusive sight of flamingos, or hippos clustered by water under sunlit skies. Speak these dreams to your guide, for Tanzania’s landscapes are ever-changing, and with each season comes a unique spectacle. Here, each step upon the land could yield a vision that takes root in your soul.
Early Preparation: Mark Your Calendar with Precision
For those seeking the finest safari experience, timing is everything. Eight to twelve months’ notice is often needed for a dream safari in peak season. Those eager for an August adventure should begin their plans in December; thus, the journey begins long before the first lion’s roar. This careful preparation is both the initiation and the promise of what lies ahead.
Expect the Unexpected: Itinerary as Wild as the Land
Know that here, you won’t fill your nights with restaurant hunts or urban revelry. A Tanzanian safari moves with the rhythm of nature, rising and resting with the sun, filling your senses with dawn light over plains and starlit skies stretching into infinity. Each day is a passage into the unknown, a dance where you follow not the clock but the world’s original, ancient pulse.
The Necessity of Health
To journey into Tanzania’s heart requires careful preparation, including vaccinations for Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A and B, and Typhoid. These precautions are a commitment to the land, a sign of respect for the timeless nature that has flourished here for centuries.
With Chalema Tanzania Safaris, your 6 days Tanzania safari transforms into an exploration through the myths and marvels of Africa. Their commitment to detail, their love for Tanzania, and their expertise will guide you through landscapes and moments that whisper of ancient stories. IVF Cost in Tanzania
In recent years, in-vitro fertilization (IVF) has emerged as a promising solution for couples facing infertility issues. The procedure involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body and then implanting the embryo into the uterus. While IVF is widely accessible in many countries, the cost can vary significantly based on location and clinic. If you're considering IVF in Tanzania, it's essential to understand the expenses involved, what to expect, and the factors that influence the cost. Understanding IVF Costs in Tanzania The cost of IVF in Tanzania can range widely depending on various factors, such as the clinic's location, the medical team's expertise, and any additional services required. On average, the cost of a single IVF cycle in Tanzania can be estimated to range between $3,000 and $7,000. This is a more affordable option compared to some Western countries, making Tanzania an attractive destination for medical tourism in fertility treatments. Factors That Influence IVF Costs Several factors affect the total cost of IVF in Tanzania:
Clinic Reputation and Location: Well-established clinics with high success rates may charge more for their services. Additionally, clinics located in major cities like Dar es Salaam might have higher prices due to the cost of living in those areas.
Diagnostic Tests: Before starting IVF, diagnostic tests like blood tests, ultrasounds, and fertility assessments are necessary. These preliminary tests may cost an additional $500 to $1,000.
Medication Costs: Fertility medications are crucial for stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. The cost of medication can add another $1,500 to $3,000 to the total IVF price.
Additional Procedures: In some cases, couples may need extra services, such as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), embryo freezing, or Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), which can increase the overall expense.
Number of IVF Cycles: The success rate of IVF varies depending on several factors, such as the woman's age and fertility health. Multiple cycles may be needed to achieve a successful pregnancy, increasing the cost accordingly.
Donor Sperm or Eggs: If a donor is required, the cost will be higher due to the expense associated with obtaining and screening the donor material.
Comparing IVF Costs in Tanzania with Other Countries
IVF in Tanzania is generally more affordable compared to Western countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom, where a single IVF cycle can cost upwards of $15,000. The lower cost in Tanzania does not necessarily imply lower quality, as many clinics in the region adhere to international standards of care.
Tips for Reducing IVF Costs
Here are some ways you can reduce the cost of IVF in Tanzania:
Research Multiple Clinics: Compare the prices and services of different fertility clinics in Tanzania. Look for clinics that offer packages, discounts, or financing options.
Consider Medical Tourism: Some clinics offer special rates for international patients. Check if any discounts are available for foreigners seeking fertility treatment.
Check Insurance Coverage: Although IVF may not be covered by all insurance plans, some may partially cover diagnostic tests or medications. It's worth checking with your insurance provider.
Success Rates and Quality of Care
The success rates of IVF treatments in Tanzania are comparable to global standards, with many clinics reporting success rates between 30% and 40% per cycle. This rate can vary depending on factors such as the woman's age, the quality of the sperm and egg, and any underlying medical conditions. It is advisable to choose a clinic with a strong track record and skilled fertility specialists to maximize the chances of a successful outcome.
Finding the Right IVF Clinic in Tanzania
When choosing a fertility clinic, consider the following:
Experience of the Medical Team: Look for clinics with certified specialists in reproductive medicine and embryology.
Available Treatments: Ensure the clinic provides a range of fertility services, such as ICSI, PGT, and cryopreservation.
Patient Reviews and Success Stories: Read reviews and testimonials from former patients to get a sense of the clinic’s reputation and patient satisfaction.
Conclusion
IVF in Tanzania offers a cost-effective solution for couples struggling with infertility. By understanding the factors that influence IVF costs, you can better prepare for the financial investment and make informed decisions. With clinics offering quality care at competitive prices, Tanzania has become a promising destination for fertility treatments.

The Marburg Virus: A Rising Threat and Current Developments in 2024
The Marburg virus, like its close cousin Ebola virus, is in the family Filoviridae but is much more virulent. Like Ebola, it causes severe hemorrhagic fever with a devastating fatal case rate of up to 88%.
The virus was isolated following an outbreak that first occurred in the town of Marburg, Germany, among laboratory workers handling infected monkeys in 1967. On the African continent, not least in 2024, have come recent occurrences of outbreaks that proved deadly and raised the profile of the virus throughout the globe.
Understanding the Marburg Virus
MVD is contracted primarily through contact with fruit bats. This is the natural host. Human-to-human transmission occurs directly or through contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces. Symptoms occur acutely and may include high fever, severe headache, muscular pain, vomiting, both internal and external bleeding, and other symptoms. Generally, in most affected patients, the disease runs its course rapidly with multi-organ dysfunction and death. Its incubation period is within the range of 2 to 21 days. This limits quick detection and control and hence allows the pathogen to spread quickly, especially in under-resourced healthcare setups. It is not currently available with a vaccine, but experimental treatments and supportive care can salvage a few patients.
The latest Outbreak of the Marburg Virus in 2024
In September 2024, Rwanda confirmed its first outbreak of Marburg virus disease and confirmed a case of 26 with six deaths. The specific concern of this outbreak is the high cases found among healthcare workers, which indicates the existence of great challenges to the infection control protocols.
The country’s current outbreak came after recent occurrences were experienced in neighboring states. Recently, Tanzania faced a Marburg outbreak in 2023 which led the continent to assess the spread of the virus to other parts of East Africa. Equatorial Guinea and Uganda have also faced such Marburg outbreaks in the recent past, emphasizing the need for enhanced surveillance and cooperation across borders.
Global Response and Vaccine Development
The Marburg virus is recognized globally to be a direct threat, and an important step has been taken in the development of vaccines. Breakthrough came in 2023 with a vaccine that was undergoing evaluation in human subjects; at this time, a vaccine that was considered quite promising. The experimental cAd3-Marburg vaccine developed by the NIH elicited a good response in its first human trial-that is, a one-time dose vaccine with its basis of the chimpanzee adenovirus vector tested on 40 healthy volunteers. It provoked an immune response without adverse reactions; it is a potential candidate for emergency use in future outbreaks.
It is noteworthy that the vaccine is still in the very nascent stages of development; therefore, widespread clinical trials are required before the vaccine will be ready for mass deployment. Meanwhile, the health authorities are contained with traditional methods of outbreak control, such as isolation and contact tracing, and public education about health.
What Has Been Learnt from the Ebola Outbreak?
Several aspects made the Marburg virus similar to Ebola, thus permitting health authorities to reap lessons learned from previous Ebola outbreaks to better grapple with the current situation. Among them are the creation of rapid response teams, the use of PPE among healthcare workers, and community engagement aimed at reducing the transmission. Another imperative aspect of cross-border collaboration exists because viruses such as Marburg do not respect political boundaries. In Rwanda, neighboring countries have been alerted and preparedness has been enhanced for the prevention of the virus.
Moving Forward: Obstacles and Hopes
Although the situation is grim at this moment, there’s hope. On top of accelerated vaccines and treatment, international cooperation gives a glimmer of hope in controlling future outbreaks. WHO’s involvement in Rwanda’s outbreak response further proved its commitment to reining in the impact of the virus. However, there is also a challenge. The vaccines and antiviral treatments have yet to be approved, so the containment is solely dependent on early detection, isolation, and supportive treatment, which gives resource-constrained countries a special vulnerability because they generally lack infrastructure for handling such outbreaks. Stigma in affected communities usually acts as a barrier to public health efforts since the people involved may make later diagnoses and hence are likely to allow the disease to spread by delaying medical review.
Conclusion
In summary, the Marburg virus is a highly lethal pathogen that induces severe hemorrhagic fever, which symptomatically tends to appear rapidly. Marburg virus symptoms normally begin with sudden onset fever, chills, severe headache, and muscle pain. More advanced forms of the disease are accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting and diarrhea, while the worst type of the disease involves jaundice, abdominal pain, and bleeding. These symptoms often present within 2 to 21 days from exposure; therefore, early recognition is important for effective management.
Currently, there is no proven treatment for the Marburg virus; however, support care has greatly improved survival. This includes hydration with oral or intravenous fluids to correct severe fluid loss as well as treating symptoms as they arise. Studies are underway on promising therapies, such as immune treatments and drug therapies, that might one day provide some hope for interventions.
The Marburg virus, as of now, is less well known than its cousin Ebola, but it’s dangerous and could trigger enormous damage. The recent outbreak in Rwanda could stir up in everybody the memory of the dangers the virus posed and continue necessary efforts with vigilance, more research, and preparedness.
Even when there’s still promising development in the vaccine sphere, the journey to eradicate the virus remains long.”. In the meantime, the present times will demand global health systems to be ready and flexible in case there is another outbreak of this killing disease. International co-operation together with the progress of medical research will see to it that the world wards off the Marburg virus and other emerging infectious diseases. That is, if the whole world had had the right tools and strategies, then one would have been able to stop the unbridled spread of disease in its track.

Unmatched Kilimanjaro Trek with a Dream Team
It was after more than a year and a half of planning, that I and my partner decided to finally set off for our Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing adventure. We always knew that it would be a challenging thing. What we didn’t expect was how much the team from African Scenic Safaris would make the journey special.
We had planned for an eight-day trek on the Northern Circuit Route, but due to low oxygen levels, we had to shorten it by a day and a half. Even with this change, the experience was incredible. We spent over a year planning every detail with Priyank from the AS team, who patiently helped us adjust our plans as needed.
When we finally began the climb, the team’s focus on our safety and comfort made all the difference. Their support turned what could have been a tough situation into a memory we’ll always treasure.
“Reaching Kilimanjaro’s peak is just one part of the climb; the real journey is shaped by those who help you get there.”
A Team Like No Other
From the start, it was clear that our guides, Godwin and Nestor, were focused on our safety and well-being.
Godwin, our head guide, had a deep knowledge of the mountain and a calm, reassuring presence that made a huge difference as we faced the challenges of the climb.
He was a mentor who loved to share insights on the best Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes and offered tips on how to acclimatize effectively.
When we had to make the tough decision to turn back because of the Kilimanjaro Altitude, Godwin’s care and concern for our health were evident. His commitment to making sure we were safe and enjoying the experience meant the world to us.
"Our guide Godwin wasn’t just leading us up the mountain—he was sharing a piece of his world with us."
Meet our Heroes of the Climb – The Kilimanjaro Porters
instagram
The Kilimanjaro Porters on our trek were simply amazing. These hardworking individuals were always there to support us, carrying our gear, setting up our camp, and greeting us with smiles and encouragement after a long day.
Their dedication made our trek much more comfortable and allowed us to fully enjoy the stunning landscapes of Kilimanjaro.
We were truly impressed by how much they went above and beyond to make our journey smooth and memorable.
“Despite the physical demands, they always had smiles on their faces, ready to lend a helping hand.”
Safety First, Always
As we climbed higher, the importance of Kilimanjaro Health & Safety became even more clear. Our team regularly checked on us, making sure we were staying hydrated and adjusting well to the altitude.
When it became clear that continuing the climb could put our health at risk, Godwin made the wise decision to turn back.
Although it was disappointing, we knew that our safety was the most important thing, and we were grateful for the care and attention we received.
"It’s not just about making it to the majestic heights of the summit—it’s about making sure everyone gets home safely."
Reflecting on the Experience
As I reflect on our Mount Kilimanjaro Hike, the memories that come up again and again aren’t just about the physical challenges. What I remember most are the incredible people who made the journey so special.
The camaraderie, the shared stories, and the deep connections we formed with our guides, porters, and each other are what made this experience truly unforgettable.
While we didn’t reach Uhuru Peak, we gained something even more valuable—friendships that will last a lifetime.
"We may not have reached the summit, but the friendships we made along the way are the real highlight of our journey."
What’s Next?
I hope our Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing adventure has sparked your interest in planning your own journey.
If so, be sure to catch our next blog, where we’ll take you on a thrilling Tanzania Safari adventure.
From lion packs to a cheetah hunt, the excitement is just beginning!
